♪ STUDENT ASSOCIATION OF PIANO ACCOMPANISTS - SAPA 501(c)(3) ♬
SAPA was created after we found that disparities in financial and educational resources prevented many young musicians from engaging in the same activities as their peers. A major aspect of this divide occurs at events such as competitions and recitals that require a piano accompanist (many times difficult to find and costly). We formed SAPA to allow all students to have access to free and reliable accompaniment while creating bonds within the musical community. Our organization supports musicians in participating in a wide variety of experiences, and each musician who fills out a request form will be paired with a volunteer in their area based on skill level and piece difficulty.
In Harmony Together is a community-based piano duet program designed to support students with neurodivergent disorders through collaborative music-making. Offered at no cost by the Student Association of Piano Accompanists, these lessons are taught by the Rosalina Duo and center on shared musical experiences. Rather than focusing on solo performance, students learn alongside an accompanist, allowing them to engage with music in a structured environment. This approach promotes collaboration, rhythmic accuracy, motivation, and enjoyment, helping participants strengthen focus and attention span. Through consistent musical partnership, students also build confidence and a sense of belonging, discovering music as a powerful tool for communication.
In Rhythm Together is an inclusive drum circle program created for seniors, including individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Organized by the Student Association of Piano Accompanists, the program uses rhythm as a shared language to promote connection and engagement. Participants are invited to take part in guided group drumming sessions that emphasize participation over performance. By creating moments of collective music-making, this program aims to build meaningful connections and provide emotional enrichment.
Pianists who are passionate about making a difference in their community can either apply as a volunteer or become president of their own chapter. Whether it be as a school club, a piano studio organization, or simply a group of pianists looking to serve others, leading and/or participating in a SAPA chapter can be a gratifying and impactful experience.
